The Department of Chemical Engineering Materials Environment (DICMA) assumed its current name in 2006.
Its history began with the establishment of the Cabinet of Docimastic Chemistry, dedicated to the teaching of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry (1873) and Applied Chemistry for Building Materials (1876). This organization, originally intended for disciplines under Applied Chemistry, evolved over the years following developments in Industrial Chemistry and found its modern structure in the founding of the Institute of Applied and Industrial Chemistry in 1932. Over the years, the original responsibilities inherent in the Chemical Industry have expanded to include all areas of Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Metallurgy. In 1983, when the university departments were established, this Institute was reorganized together with the Institute of Mining Arts into the Department of Chemical Engineering, Raw Materials Materials and Metallurgy, a name it retained until 2006.
Since 1895, the Institute and then the Department have had its headquarters in the adjacent classical-style building on Via delle Sette Sale in the San Pietro in Vincoli complex.
